Fire Alarm Requirements

Most occupied buildings have fire alarm systems, which are used to notify the occupants that they need to evacuate the area in the event of a fire. In modern fire alarm systems, it is common to find low-voltage addressable systems that can show the exact location where fire or smoke was detected. Some older systems, still in operation, contain conventional zoned fire alarm systems or bell and buzzer fire alarm systems that operate on 120-volts. The National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code, NFPA 72, governs the standards for these systems. The code specifies the requirements for fire alarm inspection, testing, maintenance, design, and installation.

Altus’ technicians have a thorough knowledge of NFPA 72 requirements and how they apply to your facility. In order to keep you code compliant, we evaluate local fire alarm regulations and work with your authority having jurisdiction to craft a customized fire alarm system service plan.

Fire Alarm Testing

An operational fire alarm test involves activating the components of the system and verifying their proper functioning. There are many devices and components being tested, including:

  • Smoke detector sensitivity test
  • Notification appliance audibility/intelligibility
  • Battery load tests
  • Manual pull stations

Fire Alarm Maintenance

When a system does not emit fire alarm panel trouble signals or false alarms, fire alarm maintenance can be overlooked, but can quickly become a problem. If you don’t address small problems immediately, they may become costly repairs if you don’t have a fire alarm maintenance plan.

As part of our preventative maintenance program, Altus develops a fire alarm maintenance plan to ensure your building is regularly serviced. Besides providing emergency service, Altus also offers routine maintenance and routine service for fire alarms.
